Karen
Williams, a single mother of three, could no longer continue her
business as a beautician for health reasons. Her social worker
referred her to the TAP This Valley Works Center for Employment
Training Program (CET) for office skills training. She quickly
learned computer skills, found a job on a temporary basis and
within a month’s time, the employer at Optical Cable hired her
full-time. She began her employment in December 2002 as a
temporary fill-in receptionist. She is currently the
receptionist and administrative assistant and has received
several raises since becoming employed enabling
her to no longer depend on public assistance. |
Aldith
Ellis, is a graduate of TAP’s This Valley Works Center of
Employment Training (CET) program, and recipient of the 2005
Award of Excellence for the Southern Region of Virginia from the
Virginia Association of Housing Counselors. She sums up her
experience at CET, “Through the CET program, I not only learned
the clerical skills that I need to successfully perform my job
and apply myself in an office environment, I also learned how to
work with people from all walks of life. I’ve been able to
incorporate my experience at CET into all aspects of my job. CET
has helped me to perform at my best and provide the best
services I can.” Aldith has worked for TAP Housing and Community
Development (HCD) for more than 8 years. Her housing counseling
efforts also assisted the HCD component in receiving the 2008
Housing Counseling Empowerment Award. |
