Councilman Sherman P. Lea

In 2007, Councilman Sherman P. Lea, of the City of Roanoke, and his family donated $2,000 to TAP This Valley

Works for a scholarship in honor of their parents.  The first Sherman P. Lea & Family Scholarship was

awarded during the May 5th press conference to Cassandra Ferreira, a 2008 TAP This Valley Works GED

graduate.  She received a $500 scholarship.  Cassandra is 19 years old.  She dropped out of school in 2007.

Cassandra states, “The TAP/GED program helped me a lot. If I ever had a question, there was always a teacher

available to help me. If it wasn’t for TAP, I would probably still not have my GED.  I am very thankful for their

excellent program and recommend it highly to anyone that is in need of their GED.  I greatly appreciate the

Sherman Lee Family for awarding me their family’s scholarship.  This will give me the opportunity to further

my education at Virginia Western Community College.  There I will start some computer classes or nursing

classes.”

Those on hand at the press conference were the founder of the WVEC, Councilman Sherman P. Lea (pictured at

top right); the city manager for the City of Salem, Kevin Boggess; the chairman of the Roanoke City School

Board, David Carson; the superintendent of Roanoke City Schools, Dr. Rita Bishop; the head coach of Virginia

Union University, Coach Greg Richardson; and the head coach of Johnson C. Smith University, Coach Daryl

McNeil.  (Photographs of individuals that are not pictured above are shown below in the order listed.)
