Purpose

The Head Start Education Coordinator works to ensure that all center-based programs are operated in a way that exemplifies the Head Start goals of providing children with educational experiences that help them grow cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically. The Head Start Education Coordinator works with the instructional staff to ensure successful, nurturing experiences for children in the child development centers, while recognizing the parents as the most important influences in the lives of their children.  This person assures appropriate implementation of the curriculum, supports, advises and monitors performance of classroom staff, and conducts daily observations to ensure ongoing quality of environments, interactions, and activities for the children.

 

Education

  BA, BS, or degree with concentration in early childhood development or related field

Responsibilities/Duties

1)      Works with instructional staff to provide and monitor quality developmental environments and experiences for children, ensuring adherence with Head Start Performance Standards, TAP Head Start Service Area Plans,  the Minimum Standards for Licensed Child Day Programs in Virginia, the Creative Curriculum and Accreditation Standards of the NAEYC National Academy of Early Childhood Programs (where applicable).

a)      Observes the classroom on a weekly basis using the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale, and the NAEYC Accreditation Classroom Observation Form and provides feedback to staff for purposes of their development in program-defined competency areas and job description responsibilities

b)      Assists classroom staff in selecting materials and equipment

i)        Reviews and approves all quarterly supply lists

ii)       Approves all requests for large equipment, as needed

iii)     Assists in purchasing and preparing special project materials, upon request

iv)     Receives and maintains file of yearly inventory for use in purchasing

v)      Distributes, receives and maintains prioritized needs lists for each center for use in purchasing

c)      Obtains and maintains prioritized needs lists for classrooms under supervision

d)      Submits requisitions for purchase of classroom equipment and supplies to Education Supervisor as needed

e)      Works with Education Coordinator team to submit orders for classroom supplies each quarter.

f)        Monitors planning and implementation of classroom activities and home visits

i)        Reviews lesson plans weekly to assure compliance with Head Start Performance Standards

ii)       Receives and approves all field trip requests

iii)     Reviews food experiences and health and nutrition activities

iv)     Assists the teaching staff with getting parents involved in the education program both in the classroom and at home

v)      Monitors children’s education records to ensure that they are accurate and up to date

vi)     Observes at least one home visit per year for each teacher

 

2)      Encourages and facilitates a team approach among all service area staff in all centers.

a)      Attends center staff meetings when possible

b)      Maintains open communication with all staff

c)      Motivates and supports staff through positive feed back and recognition of staff strengths whenever possible

d)      Coordinates and facilitates problem-solving process when applicable

e)      Involves appropriate service area representatives in problem-solving activities

 

3)      Completes performance appraisals and uses results to guide staff in their own professional development.

a)      Completes performance appraisals annually for all staff in assigned centers, using criteria based upon job descriptions.  Performance appraisals are completed based on the following criteria:

i)        Classroom and home-visit observations

ii)       Documentation of satisfactory completion of regular job duties, exemplary performance, and problems

iii)     Professional development goals

iv)     Self-assessments

b)      Completes follow-up appraisals within 30 days for all staff who rate 2 or less on performance appraisal forms, or as indicated in individual plans and performance appraisals

 

4)      Works with Training Coordinator to promote activities that will contribute to the professional development of center staff:

a)      Plans and coordinates workshops and training sessions, in cooperation Head Start Training/Transition Coordinator

b)      Makes recommendations and provides information to staff about available opportunities for professional development

c)      Ensures that staff have completed individual Professional Development Plans on file with Training Coordinator

d)      Assists with CDA certification or re-certification, as needed

 

5)      Supports a team approach in working with other Head Start Coordinators and supervisors to meet Head Start Performance Standards and further the goals of the program.

a)      Contributes to the Head Start Newsletter, which includes information related to all service areas, semi-annually

b)      Works with all service area staff and Coordinators to evaluate effectiveness of teams in assigned centers

c)      Encourages and supports Lead Teachers to create an atmosphere in the centers that is welcoming to parents and families

d)      Inspects program sites and reports to the appropriate service area supervisor any health, safety, fire, occupancy, licensing, or other violations for corrective action, as needed

e)      Attends all appropriate staff meetings, regularly

f)        Identifies and reports all suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to Child Protective Services, with copies to Head Start Director, Education Supervisor, and Supervisor of Family and Community Partnerships

g)      Works with FCP staff to secure support services for families when CPS reports are necessary

h)      Maintains a working knowledge of most current Head Start Performance Standards, Minimum Standards for Licensed Child Care Programs, and NAEYC Accreditation Standards

 

6)      Supports a team approach in serving as a member of the Education Staff.

a)      Informs Education Supervisor of needs, problems, and concerns regarding Center-based program

b)      Meets with Education Supervisor to provide updates on progress, goals, and activities in the Center-based Program

c)      Provides Education Supervisor with written monthly reports on Center-based Program activities

d)      Makes Education Supervisor aware of staffing changes and vacancies as they occur

e)      Submits information for filling vacancies to Education Supervisor; receives applications; schedules and chairs screening and interview committees for hiring new center staff; and follows all additional hiring procedures as instructed by Administrative Office Manager

f)        Maintains substitute list and assists Lead Teachers with finding substitutes as needed

g)      Ensures that updated educational credentials and training documentation are submitted to Training Coordinator for filing in training files

h)      Works to continually improve and update professional skills and knowledge by attending meetings, conferences, or classes to keep informed of current best practices in the field

 

7)      Works with Monitoring and Compliance Supervisor to complete and submit licensing and accreditation applications and re-applications for assigned centers as necessary.

 

8)      Reports suspected child abuse and neglect to supervisor and appropriate authorities.

 

9)      Adheres to NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct

Curriculum.

 Required Experience

  • Four years experience working with families and young children
  • Three years experience in a supervisory capacity

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of preschool development and best practices in the field of early childhood education
  • Working knowledge of reflective supervision techniques with adults
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with staff and parents
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills

 

Special Requirements

 Must be able to pass medical and background investigations and have daily access to reliable transportation and a valid Virginia Driver's License.

$27,974.40/annually
