Purpose

The HEAD Start Dental Services Specialist is responsible for assisting the Supervisor of Health Services in all aspects of planning and implementing the Oral/Dental Health Services Program for Head Start children and families within the service area. 

Education

 Two year degree in health, dental health, or social work preferred.

HS diploma or GED required.

Responsibilities

 1)  Assists Supervisors and Coordinators of Health Services in planning for dental screening, examination, and flouride treatment for all Head Start/Early Head Start enrolled children and Early Head Start expecting moms.

     A) Plans, schedules, and coordinates dental appointments.

     B)  Arranges transportation and/or transports children to appointments.

2)  Ensures that each child and family has access to a dental home.

    A)  Serves as a liaison to the dental providers in the TAP service area.

    B)  Monitors records to ensure that eligible children have dental insurance.

    C)  Monitors records for compliance with Virginia licensing and Head Start Performance Standards concerning dental requirements.

    D)  Coordinates follow-up care for dental needs of enrolled children, pregnant moms, and families.

3)  Works with other service area coordinators to facilitate an integrated system of service delivery to children and families.

    A)  Attends child development team meetings as needed to discuss needs of individual children and families.

    B)  Documents a plan of action for children and pregnant moms dental needs and follows up to ensure that the plan is carried out.

    C)  Tracks requests for information from service providers.

    D)  Updates the Supervisor of Health Services concerning follow up and referral.

    E)  Works with the Supervisor of Health Services to provide technical assistance to staff concerning dental issues as requested.

    F)  Monitors all dental related documentation and tracking for compliance and service delivery.

    G)  Monitors computer data reports for accuracy.

4)  Plans and delivers trainings on oral health topics in the classroom, on home visits, and at parent meetings as requested.

5)  Supports a team approach when working with staff.

    A)  Attends weekly family and health services Supervisors and Coordinators team meeting.

    B)  Attends weekly coordinators meeting.

    C)  Attends all assigned meetings.

    D)  Plans with appropriate staff as a team for handling oral health related concerns of children and families.

6)  Adheres to a professional standard of work.

    A)  Completes documentation, recordkeeping, and reports in a timely and efficient manner.

    B)  Informs supervisor of oral health related center concerns.

    C)  Participates in health related community teams, events, and coalitions as assigned.

    D)  Adheres to all TAP and TAP Head Start policies and the NAEYC Code of Ethics as adopted by TAP Head Start.

    E)  Maintains confidentiality of all child, family and staff information.

    F)  Adheres to the Head Start Performance Standards, Virginia Licensing, and State/Local laws and regulations.

7)  Attends meetings, conferences and workshops as requested.

8)  Performs any other job related tasks upon request.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of community health practice required.

  • Knowledge of oral health practice and resources required.

  • Knowledge of family and health related community resources required.

  • Experience in working with children and families required.

  • Must demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication.

  • Must demonstrate time management and organizational ability.

  • Must be willing to work as a part of a team.

  • Must have a history of regular work attendance and satisfactory job performance.

  • Must be able to self direct and demonstrate good judgment and decision making skills.

Special Requirements

  • Must be capable of maintaining certification in First Aid and CPR for adults, infants and children.

  • Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs.

  • Must possess a valid VA Drivers License and access to reliable transportation.

  • Must be willing to adjust work schedule as necessary.

Salary

$10.19/hr.
